An 'amalgam tattoo' showing particles of metal - mainly silver - in gingival mucosa. The particles are lying within histiocytes, or lying free in the tissue aligned along collagen fibres.
Result: Although amalgam contains both mercury and tin as well as silver, only the silver is retained in the long term.
