Safety Data

ABSOLUTE ETHANOL: is a flammable liquid and should never be handled close to heat or naked flame. The vapour is heavier than air and can travel for a considerable distance along the ground to a source of ignition and flash back. Ethanol is regarded as one of the safest industrial solvents because although it possesses narcotic properties, vapour concentrations sufficient to produce narcosis are rarely, if ever, reached in a medical laboratory. Ethanol is rapidly oxidised in the body to carbon dioxide and water and does not produce permanent damage to the central nervous system.

ACETIC ACID: is a corrosive substance and will cause severe damage to exposed skin. Ingestion will cause dental erosion, bronchitis and respiratory difficulties. It is an eye and mucous membrane irritant.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 5; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 20

CONGO RED: is a disazo dye which is a mutagen and a potential carcinogen, is highly toxic and a skin and eye irritant. It must never be handled during pregnancy. Always use a fume hood when handling this dye.

CRYSTAL VIOLET: is a triaminotriarylmethane dye which is a potential carcinogen, a mutagen and is highly toxic. It is an eye, skin and mucous membrane irritant and should not be handled by staff during pregnancy.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 24

GLYCERIN JELLY: is a mounting medium that contains gelatin, glycerin and phenol. The amount of phenol should not be sufficient to cause a health hazard. Glycerin jelly will irritate eyes, skin and mucous membranes.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 19

HYDROCHLORIC ACID: is a strong irritant and corrosive and must be handled with great care. It will cause severe burns to exposed skin and eyes. The vapour is also a strong irritant and corrosive. Always use a fume hood when handling this acid. ALWAYS add acid to water and NEVER water to acid as heat is generated which can cause a violent reaction.

MOUNTING MEDIUM: usually xylene or toluene based and the effects are as for xylene.

SIRIUS RED: is a disazo dye. Little is known about the hazards associated with its use but other disazo dyes are toxic and carcinogenic. Handle with care.

SODIUM BORATE: is a toxic substance which causes depression of the circulatory system resulting in shock. It is an eye irritant. It causes desquamation, vomiting and diarrhoea.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 4; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 30

SODIUM CHLORIDE: is a skin and eye irritant. It produces dehydration and will irritate the stomach if ingested in large amounts. Large quantities of sodium chloride ingested over a long period of time has caused defects in new born laboratory animals.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 19

SODIUM HYDROXIDE: causes severe burns which heal slowly. A liquid splash to the eye can cause blindness. It will cause severe damage to all mucous membranes and is toxic when ingested.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 5; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 21

THIOFLAVINE T: is a thiazole dye. Its toxic effects upon humans have not been quantified. Handle with care.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 5; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 2

XYLENE: is a moderately flammable liquid which is a mild eye and mucous membrane irritant. It is a primary skin irritant and a central nervous system depressant. It will defat skin and may cause dermatitis. Death has occured from over respiratory failure due to exposure.
