Distinctively coloured labels are incorporated into actively mineralizing bone following pre-biopsy administration of fluorescent compounds. Unstained tissue sections are examined under UV light to visualize these labels, and the surface extent and distance between them can be used as histomorphometric indices of bone mineralization.
