Bone - Safety Data

ABSOLUTE ETHANOL: is a flammable liquid and should never be handled close to heat or naked flame. The vapour is heavier than air and can travel for a considerable distance along the ground to a source of ignition and flash back. Ethanol is regarded as one of the safest industrial solvents because although it possesses narcotic properties, vapour concentrations sufficient to produce narcosis are rarely, if ever, reached in a medical laboratory. Ethanol is rapidly oxidised in the body to carbon dioxide and water and does not produce permanent damage to the central nervous system.

ACETONE: is a highly flammable substance. The vapour is heavier than air and can travel along the ground for a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back. Handle beneath a spark proofed fume hood. Acetone is a mild eye, skin and mucous membrane irritant and a central nervous system depressant. Persons with chronic respiratory or skin diseases are at an increased risk. Alcohol consumption will enhance the toxic effects of acetone.

GLYCOL METHACRYLATE: is a toxic substance and is an irritant to eyes, skin and mucous membranes.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 21

HAEMATOXYLIN: is a natural dye and a flammable powder and should not be handled close to heat or naked flame. It is a mild irritant to eyes, skin and mucous membranes. Its toxicity has not been quantified. Handle with care.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 11; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 19

HYDROCHLORIC ACID: is a strong irritant and corrosive and must be handled with great care. It will cause severe burns to exposed skin and eyes. The vapour is also a strong irritant and corrosive. Always use a fume hood when handling this acid. ALWAYS add acid to water and NEVER water to acid as heat is generated which can cause a violent reaction.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 9; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 22

LITHIUM CARBONATE: is a potential carcinogen, an irritant and a corrosive substance. It will cause burns to exposed skin and eyes.

N-N DIMETHYL ANILINE: is a toxic substance causing headache, shortness of breath, weakness, nausea, confusion and stupor. At high levels methemaglobinaemia occurs causing convulsions, coma and possibly death. Chronic effects include central nervous system disorders, liver, kidney and bone marrow damage, weight loss, anaemia and weakness.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 17.

PARAROSANILIN: is a triaminotriphenylmethane dye. It is a potential carcinogen and as such should be handled with care. Its toxicity has not been quantified.

RESINS - EPOXY, POLYESTER, ACRYLIC: are toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Toxicity can develop through skin absorption, inhalation or accidental ingestion and can result in sensitisation, heart dysfunction, chest spasm, neurological disorders and blood disorders. Resins are flammable and should never be handled close to heat or naked flame. The diluents of resins are volatile and many are toxic.

SILVER NITRATE: is a caustic substance and can cause burns. It is toxic if ingested, the silver being absorbed into the bloodstream and deposited in a variety of body tissues. It is a severe eye irritant. In contact with a combustible substance silver nitrate can cause fire. Silver nitrate splashed on to the skin will oxidise on contact to a black compound which is difficult to remove.
