BASIC FUCHSIN: is a triaminotriphenylmethane dye. It is a flammable powder and should not be handled close to heat or naked flame. It is a potential carcinogen and an eye, skin and mucous membrane irritant.
EYES - code 2; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 24
ß-D-GLUCOSE: is hygroscopic and prolonged skin contact may cause dermatitis and cracked skin. It is an eye irritant.
EYES - Code 1; SKIN - Code 5; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 18
BEESWAX: when pure is not hazardous to health, but wax additives may be (for example the plasticiser, dimethyl sulphoxide is a potential carcinogen). Molten wax produces fine droplets of paraffin wax as an aerosol, during processing and embedding procedures, which can be inhaled leading to a low grade lipid pneumonia.

BENZENE: is a carcinogen. It is a flammable substance and should never be handled close to heat or naked flame. The vapour is heavier than air and can travel along the ground for a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back. It is toxic and the effects are cumulative. It is an eye and skin irritant and will defat skin. Inhalation causes dizziness, headache and drowsiness. Ingestion causes headache, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability, nervousness and possibly blood disorders.

BENZOYL PEROXIDE: is a carcinogen. Skin contact may cause dermatitis. It is an eye and mucus membrane irritant and moderately toxic by ingestion which also gives rise to intestinal disorders. It should always be stored damp as spontaneous explosion may occur when dry or by friction or shock.

BIEBRICH SCARLET: is a disazo dye. Its effects on humans have not been quantified but other dyes in this group are highly toxic.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 24
BISMARK BROWN: is a disazo dye. There is insufficient data available on the effects of this dye on humans. However, other dyes in this group are carcinogenic, mutagenic and highly toxic so handle with great care.

Bismuth nitrate is an eye irritant. It is a low hazard for skin contact, inhalation or ingestion.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 5; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 19
BISMUTH SUBNITRATE (oxynitrate) is a skin irritant. It can be absorbed through the skin and may produce toxicity. Data is not available on the effects of eye contact although it is believed that irritation would result. Inhalation or ingestion may damage kidneys and liver.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 6; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 21
BORAX (Sodium tetraborate): is toxic and an eye irritant. Ingestion leads to desquamation of intestinal epithelium, vomiting and diarrhoea with depression of the circulatory system and resultant shock.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 5; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 30
BORIC ACID: is an eye and respiratory tract irritant and is toxic when ingested. It can cause desquamation, vomiting and diarrhoea with depression of the central nervous system resulting in shock.
EYES - Code 2; SKIN - Code 4; INHALED - Code 15; INGESTED - Code 28
BOVINE SERUM ALBUMIN: Commercial animal products may not have been checked for virus or bacterial contamination. Wear protective clothing and handle with care.
EYES - Code 1: SKIN - Code 11; INHALED - Code 14: INGESTED - Code 18
BROMINE: this is a very toxic and corrosive substance. Eye contact will cause redness, pain and blurred vision. Skin contact will cause redness, pain and can produce serious burns. Prolonged contact of low concentrations can cause dermatitis. Bromine may be absorbed through the skin in quantities sufficient to cause toxicity. Inhalation of the vapour may cause sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath, laboured breathing and dizziness and significant exposure may be fatal. Ingestion causes similar symptoms but in addition may produce vomiting and abdominal spasm.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 13; INHALED - Code 14; INGESTED - Code 21
BUTAN-1-OL: is a severe irritant to eyes. A splash to the eye can cause corneal inflammation, blurred vision, lacrimation and photophobia. It will defat skin causing local irritation, prolonged exposure may cause sensitisation. Inhalation causes headache, dizziness, drowsiness and irritation of the respiratory tract. Ingestion can cause central nervous system depression and liver and kidney damage.
EYES - Code 3; SKIN - Code 12; INHALED - Code 16; INGESTED - Code 21
2-BUTOXYETHANOL: is a flammable substance and should not be handled close to heat or naked flame. The vapour is heavier than air and can travel for a considerable distance along the ground to a source of ignition and flash back. It is a fetotoxin and should not be handled during pregnancy. It is a mild skin irritant but strong eye irritant causing redness, pain and corneal burning. It is toxic and a central nervous system depressant by inhalation or ingestion and causes respiratory tract irritation, unconsciousness and kidney and liver damage.
