The Seducing Sins of Sanctimonious Spin Doctors

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

That no flesh should glory in his presence! Oops, seems the Purpose Driven Church Growth gurus missed that bit... and the bit about worldly wisdom being foolishness... and the bit about not many wise or noble being called... and the bit about the weak being used to confound the mighty... and the bit about the nobodies and the despised being used to undo the haughtiness of those who think they are all that with chips. Goodness, seems they’ve completely lost the plot doesn’t it? Of course that assumes they had it in the first place. And I say that advisedly, I am not simply trying to be nasty, contrary to the belief of some. The book of Titus speaks of such people...

For there are also many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whom it is necessary to shut their mouths, who overturn whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. There said a certain one of them, a prophet of their own, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons."

This testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish myths and to commands of men turning away from the truth. All things indeed are pure to the pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience have been defiled. They profess to know God, but in their works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work. Titus 1:10-16

Teaching falsehood for the sake of dishonest gain! For which cause rebuke them sharply! It is necessary to shut their mouths! Giving heed to the commands of men turning themselves and whole households away from the truth! Professing faith but denying Him by their abominable (idolatrous), dishonest (disobedient) works! Sounds a tad definitive yes?

Where in this passage of Scripture (or ANY passage for that matter) is there support for the dim-witted notion that the Heavenly Father requires His people to be affluent, influential or even popular in order to proclaim the Gospel?  Celebrity saints? You know it really is quite disconcerting to witness the likes of Paradise Community Church’s senior pastor Ashley Evans, his Sydney mentor Brian Houston and a seemingly endless gaggle of tag along tofu’s trot out one star studded line up after another of TBN1 tragics for the entertainment of the professing redeemed, and the deception of the perpetually lost. In fact, it’s more than simply disconcerting; it makes me absolutely furious that these opportunistic, read between the line treasure seekers have serenaded to spiritual sleep their followers while turning what should be the reverent body of believers into a circus-like cash cow.

The Word of God is replete with examples of divinely assisted human humility in order that the Father, who is doing the redeeming, be credited and glorified ALONE. Remember? How did professing believers get so seduced? – So deceived? Consider Moses confronting the might of Pharaoh. No eloquence of speech, no army, no power save a staff and the promise of the Almighty. Consider Gideon whose outnumbered 32,000 strong army was whittled down to merely 300 men so that the Father’s power alone would be exemplified in the comprehensive defeat of the Mideanites (Judges 7:2)

And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. Judges 7:2

Consider David the lowly shepherd boy who fearlessly faced off the stinking Philistines and downed their chief thug with a single stone. No army assisted him, no press releases vaunted his victory and no church circuit tour ensued. The boy who feared Yahweh and trusted in Him alone became king over all Israel, not of his own efforts but by Providence alone.

Consider Esther who confronted King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) without an army, without force, without riches, influence, power, a recording contract or a book deal and yet prevailed.

Consider Elijah who called down fire from Heaven which utterly consumed the water soaked sacrifice, the stones around it and even the dust of the ground in order to shame the prophets of Baal, and to remind all those in attendance that the Lord is God and omnipotent NOT man.

Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God... 1 Kings 18:37

Consider the Apostle Paul who unashamedly proclaimed the exact opposite of what Evans, Houston, Hybels, Schuller, Warren et al are bilking, that in his WEAKNESS God’s strength is made perfect. Whose strength is made perfect? In whose weakness?

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

According to Paul the power of Y’shua rests upon those with infirmities (frailties, weaknesses) NOT POWER! Unlike Paul, so-called leaders of the Christian church today clearly would rather glory in their own self efforts, power, popularity, influence, book sales, revenue and large denominations.

Newsflash folks... Completely disregard what the Purpose Driven spin doctors proclaim. God does not need or even require our help in building His Kingdom on earth. He alone will do that by himself when He returns in power and glory. This may come as somewhat of a shock to those who have been sequentially entranced, but mankind was never created for God’s service, rather for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11). The omnipotent Creator of all doesn’t need our help with anything. To suggest He does is to blaspheme Him by making Him less than He is. So the concept of recruiting ‘stars’ to better reach the unreached is lunatic reasoning. It was this kind of twisted logic that led the aforementioned Ashley Evans to proclaim the elevation of Australian Idol winner and Paradise Community Church poster boy Guy Sebastian, as ‘A Time of God’s Visitation.’ The PCC’s obsession with popular, affluent and influential people is frankly quite sickening; and as you will read below, is a pandemic cyst in the professing Christian church today.

You know, it occurs to me that too many believers get so wrapped up in their ‘ministry’, their ‘service’ . . . their ‘God Work’ . . . that they oftentimes fall into the trap of actually believing that God needs their help. They actually come to think they are so important that without them, His plans won’t come to fruition.

There appears to be four working classes here. Those who are genuinely deceived as to their calling and mission, those who jolly well know they are fraudsters, sheers in hand furiously fleecing the flock, those unstudied, blissfully benighted ones, who blithely place their trust in one charismatic chameleon after another, and those who have smelled the ill wind, have a clue and are out warning others.

Rather than preach the Gospel, these salesmen and women of the second working class are peddling a psychological philosophy and framework to the first and third working classes who are nodding blissfully in and out of spiritual la la land. This flesh-centric philosophy, including a set of curious values is otherwise known as the Human Potential Movement, a vanity appeasing ideology that grew out of a humanistic psychology created by Albert Maslow (1908-70) in the 1940s and 1950s. And while the whole farce is enacted in perpetuum from Sunday morning lecterns, the fourth working class tirelessly sounds the alarm to the absolute indignation of those who are trying to sleep.

There is nothing ‘Christian’ or ‘godly’ about what is happening. It may have the form of godliness to those with limited insight, but its evil is evidenced by its Scriptural rebellion. It’s the same old regurgitated garbage Satan offered the gullible Eve in the Garden... “You shall be as god’s deciding for yourselves what is right and wrong...” And it’s being swallowed hook, line and sinker because...

1.    Most people are intrinsically too lazy to do the study it takes to see it for what it is.

2.    Most people will embrace anything that appeals to their own voracious selfishness.

3.    Not everyone who claims to be saved actually is.

US Watchman Paul Proctor hit the nail squarely on the head when he wrote...

The lust for cultural relevance, recognition and reciprocation have lured many churches into compromise - particularly those of the seeker sensitive and Purpose Driven sort - with a drunken infatuation for the wealthy, famous and influential as if they were the key to connecting a fallen world to Christ, when in fact, such pursuits are largely vain efforts designed to draw crowds and get attention - which seems to be today's first order of business around the old church house2.

My wife Pamela puts it so beautifully... ‘When God is in control life is a miracle. When I am in control life’s a mess!”

Finally consider Zechariah ...

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 4:6

The following insightful article by U.S. Watchman Paul Proctor sounds the shofar clear and loud so that only the spiritually dead will fail to hear it. Wake up and smell the coffee people, Dick Dastardly is in the house. (Mark 13:22)

DOES GOD NEED HOLLYWOOD?

I pose the above question because there continues to be confusion among professing Christians today regarding the Bible's call to repentance and faith, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the transforming power of Almighty God.

In a recent article titled, Pastor To Church: Send Love Letters To Britney Spears, I commented on the misguided adventures of Southland Christian Church and their plan to send love notes to Britney Spears as an evangelical response to her many infamous problems. This writer, along with others, recognized it for the shameless publicity stunt that it was.

The lust for cultural relevance, recognition and reciprocation have lured many churches into compromise - particularly those of the seeker sensitive and Purpose Driven sort - with a drunken infatuation for the wealthy, famous and influential as if they were the key to connecting a fallen world to Christ, when in fact, such pursuits are largely vain efforts designed to draw crowds and get attention - which seems to be today's first order of business around the old church house.

The bright lights are obviously blinding the brethren these days. And what really disturbs me is this perverse and underlying assumption that God somehow needs celebrities to get His Gospel message out to all the little people, in spite of what His Word says to the contrary:

"Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence." - 1st Corinthians 1:25-29

But unfortunately men do want to glory in God's presence; and so they resort to gimmickry to try and conjure up what God will not give them in order to make themselves appear legitimate.

So, on the heels of Southland Christian Church's love-letter mission to Britney Spears comes a story from the Christian Post titled, Hundreds Pray to Transform Hollywood, that reports on a "crowd of over 700 Christians and media professionals" gathering in California to try and redeem Hollywood. The article begins this way:

Hundreds hoping to redeem Hollywood asked God to change the hearts of entertainment leaders and celebrities like Britney Spears during a media prayer breakfast Friday morning.

Now, keep in mind, there is nothing here about anyone asking God to save the lost, poor and forgotten in and around Hollywood - the world's castaways, confused, homeless, drunk and drug addicted nobodies. No, according to this article, they want God to bless the big shots - so the big shots can in turn, use their big shot power and influence to reach the little shots that worship and serve them.

Is that what Jesus did?

Do you see how sick and twisted this is - how this actually distorts, perverts and undermines the Gospel of Jesus Christ by attempting to capture and co-opt the worldly power and influence of Hollywood to save Hollywood?

Did Jesus tell the woman caught in adultery to go forth and use her erotic and seductive powers to make disciples for Him? No, He told her to "go, and sin no more," meaning, leave your loathsome lifestyle.

The crowd of over 700 Christians and media professionals convened starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills for the fourth annual National Media Prayer Breakfast. The event was founded by Larry Poland, CEO of Mastermedia International, a ministry focused on leaders in the entertainment and media industries.

Participants heard inspirational music and messages by leading performers and prominent guests in the media, and dedicated 40 minutes of the event praying for those who have the power to influence many from the entertainment capitol of the nation.

You see, they didn't dedicate those 40 minutes to pray for those who needed the power of God, but instead dedicated 40 minutes praying for those who have another power already - with hopes of exploiting it to their advantage and agenda - a power that is incapable of transforming anyone from death unto life.

If it hasn't registered yet, they're asking God to bless the idols of Hollywood.

And here I thought the power of God was found in the foolishness of preaching.

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God." - 1st Corinthians 1:18

Even so, the article goes on to say:

"Nothing will change Hollywood except prayer," said Karen Covell, founder and director of Hollywood Prayer Network, in a recent interview on the "Out of the Boat" radio show of Christian Life Broadcasting. "We pray for God to come into their hearts and show who He is to them."

"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." - James 4:3

"The non-believers in the industry who come always leave just amazed that we're not hating them, we're not judging them," said Covell. "We're loving them and blessing them and lifting them up and that's a powerful example."

A powerful example of what, disobedience to God's Word and a failure to carry out the Great Commission? I suspect, what amazes them is the overall tolerance, if not outright acceptance of sin.

"We need to be culturally relevant as Christians," she said.

But, Jesus never once commanded us to be culturally relevant - only obedient and faithful to His Word. Cultural relevance is the rotten fruit of compromise, not the fruit of the Spirit or the work of an evangelist.

The prayer advocate said that she hopes Christians can support the work in Hollywood through prayer instead of giving up on it by switching the channel or boycotting certain programs.

So, in the interest of transforming Hollywood, Christians need to watch and support their filth on TV with our prayers and our patronage?

Who's transforming whom here?

"Hollywood is not Sodom and Gomorrah. It's Nineveh. It can be redeemed," she said.

But did Jonah go to Nineveh to be relevant and support the culture and commerce there with his prayers and patronage?

No, the Lord sent him there to preach.

"And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee." - Jonah 3:1-2

And what was the message Jonah preached that caused them to fast and repent in sackcloth and ashes?

"Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." - Jonah 3:4b

If Hollywood is Nineveh, why then are Christians not delivering the same message as Jonah?

It is because today's "Christian" is, by and large, not a proclaimer or an obeyer of God's Word - but only an enabler who seeks relevancy with a corrupt culture and his or her own glory in God's presence.

"These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes." - Psalm 50:21
