When Positive is Negative

Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book that it may be for the time to come forever and ever. For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children who will not hear the law of the LORD; who tell the seers, "Don't see!" and to the prophets, "Don't prophesy to us right things. Tell us pleasant things. Prophesy deceits. Get out of the way. Turn aside from the path. Cause the Holy One of Yisra'el to cease from before us." Therefore thus says the Holy One of Yisra'el, "Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely on it; therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant.  Isaiah 30: 8-13

Oh such a ‘negative’ passage of Scripture. Believe it or not according to the theology of some because of its ‘negative’ tone it is to be rejected. The thought goes: ‘If the message is positive it’s from God, if it’s negative it’s from the devil.’ How did such lunatic reasoning become main stream within ‘Christian’ thought? Answer … infantile theology! Enter Norman Vincent Peale. A professing charismatic minister and graduate of the Unity Village – a Christless theosophist (god-thought) think tank, who claimed in his 1956 book The Power of Positive Thinking that ‘positive’ thoughts alone are the key to all things ‘success’. Peale’s faulty dogma, which has been largely embraced by main-stream churchianity, is otherwise known in New Age circles as ‘New Thought” which places great emphasis on being ‘positive’ and excludes anything that even remotely suggests negativity. Since those who embrace ‘New Thought’ teachings believe that reality is created by a person’s thoughts, it is critical that they dwell only on thoughts that are ‘positive’ lest their desired reality be negated. This kind of unscriptural teaching is rife within charismatic denominations and is most often justified by an unfaithful rendering of Deuteronomy 30:19:

“ … I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,”

Proponents of positive thought theology usually omit the remainder of the verse which reads …

“ … loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."

Please note that the verse in question makes NO reference to anything even remotely ‘positive’. It is implied by Positive Thought proponents and linked to ‘life’ and ‘blessing’ without qualification. It is the height of unfaithful Scripture translation and indicative of immature biblical discernment. This passage of Scripture from verse 1 through to verse 20 concerns itself with the Heavenly Father’s carrot and stick approach to the Children of Israel. Obedience to the law (Torah) brought blessing while disobedience brought curses. The whole context of Deuteronomy 30:1-20 is this (Speaking to the children of Israel) … “If you will turn fully to God and be obedient, I [Yahwey] will deliver you from bondage and once again make you a nation”. Read it for yourself. It has NOTHING to do with being blessed by thinking only positive thoughts! I am frankly amazed at the infantile thought processes that have delivered the professing church into such a deplorable state of foolishness. It occurs to me that too many ‘pastors’ are preaching from their peer’s best selling books rather than from the infallible Word of God.

Richard E. Geis aptly notes in his personal journal: “… The main-stream Christians are lip-service religions in the main, convenience religions, social religions and they are the ones most subject to erosion and defections and infiltrations and subversion. A large and successful effort seems to have been made by the occultists’ New Age planners to dilute and alter the message of most of the mainstream Christian religions”. 1

The next natural progression in this leavened lie is the teaching of Human Potential, otherwise known under such banners as, “Understanding God’s plan for your life, fulfilling God’s dream for your life, realising your potential in God”, “unlocking your potential in Christ” ad infinitum. To be frank, the ‘tag’ is irrelevant. Take any mention of ‘God” out of the title and replace it with ‘the universe’ and the very same teaching would rest comfortably on the shelves of any occult bookstore. The truth is that the Positive Thought camp is (perhaps) unwittingly preaching doctrines of demons.

Perhaps even more treacherous is the self imposed snare of the Positive Thought proponents by their rejection of ‘negative’ thoughts which deny any possibility of divine correction or rebuke, which in turn beckons pride (which comes before destruction – note Isaiah 30:8-13) and arrogance – the very traits that saw the author of this false teaching (Lucifer) fall from heaven.

The sobering reality is that in order to accommodate Positive Thought theology 90+ % of Old Testament teaching must, by consequence, be rejected.

Let us again consider our opening Scripture and from it evaluate the maturity of the Positive Thought theology …

We can see from this verse that this prophesy was recorded “for a time to come and forever”.   It speaks of a people who prefer to embrace lies rather than truth. They are described as a rebellious and lying people who will not hear (be obedient to) the law of the Lord. They demand falsehood over truth, positive things over negative. They are a people who continue to be willingly deceived. According to this passage they are despisers of the Word, people who trust and rely upon oppression (lit: fraud) and perverseness (lit: a departing from righteousness) and as a result the iniquity (punishment thereof) they would hear nothing of what will visit them swiftly. Simply put they are fools!

So, when is Positive Negative? - when it breeds the kind of self delusional arrogance that refuses to listen to correction according to the Word of God in preference for the ‘positive only’ teachings of those on the payroll of the one who has always disguised himself as an angel of light. Consider the wisdom of Proverbs 25:27:

“It is not good to eat much honey; nor is it honourable to seek one's own honour”.

And again in verse 28:

Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

Be assured, if the enemy of our souls cannot huff and puff and blow our house down then he will shower us with praise and accolade and good tidings so that he may waltz on in uncontested. The church of today has become an un-walled village, lulled into a false sense of security by that very seducer and because they have bought the ‘all things positive’ lie, they will fail to heed the warnings of the watchmen and will by consequence be swiftly and utterly destroyed as Isaiah 30:8-13 so lucidly points out.

Do you have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church?
