The Watchman Report

Bentley's Bunch

Defending The Indefensible

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." 2 Timothy 4:3-4

“Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to Him, that you may not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first.”  2 Thessalonians 2:1-3

“the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some1 will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons2.” 1 Timothy 4:1

"And then if any man shall say to you Behold here is Christ or behold there, believe not. For false Christ's and false prophets shall rise and shall show signs and wonders to seduce [fig lead astray] if possible even the elect".    Mark 13:21-22

Y'shua warned that one of the primary indicators of the last days would be deception. He said that while the gospel would indeed be preached to the world He did not say the world would accept the message. Nowhere does the Word of God tell us to expect great, worldwide revivals just before Y'shua returns. Scripture is clear, apostasy precedes His second coming NOT revival.

Gold teeth mystically appearing in mouths, gold dust and gemstones mystically falling from the ether, unsubstantiated claims of healings and the dead being raised, angels guiding the services, mass hypnotism and mantra-like chanting, manifestations of apparent drunkenness [see Isa 29:9-16],  heretical teachings, disorder and confusion of all manner, hysterical laughter, barnyard sounds and behaviour, an elderly woman being kicked in the face (apparently at the behest of God Himself), a colon cancer patient head butted in the stomach, a pastor felled WWF style and other such insanity, the complete absence of Gospel preaching, an obsession with fire and angels, an ATM installed in the church for convenient cash, and worst of all, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Welcome to the Lakeland Outpouring.

Now, think about it for just a moment. Apart from all of the other bizarre behaviour accompanying these kind of circuses, how is the mystical appearing of gold dust and gem stones in any way glorifying to God? How is the dispensing of brightly coloured baubles which appeal solely to the flesh in  any way a sign of the presence of the Holy God? On the contrary, the discerning believer (of which there are precious few it would seem) would quickly recognise such allurements as quite the opposite.

Australian readers of this report may well ask what does a so-called revival in the United States have to do with us? Simple, church leaders with an insatiable lust for popularity, social standing, money and numbers will want it at their place. Think of the publicity it would receive. Indeed. The American Assemblies of God have officially disendorsed the Lakeland Revival and have cautioned people to stay away from it; not so Australian AoG leaders. Already foolish 'pastors' in New Zealand, Melbourne and Queensland have invited huckster Todd Bentley to infect their congregations, and it's only a matter of time before others jump on this unholy bandwagon. These reports are a warning to all.

Lakeland Smoke and Miracles

We have no way of knowing whether or not the above image is real or doctored, what we do know is that the so-called Lakeland Revival is NOT of God the Father. It is staggering to us that anyone in their right mind would endorse any of the garbage that flows like effluent from the Ignited Church in Lakeland Florida but they do. In fact, the desperately gullible are flooding into the  'church' by the tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands more are being poisoned online through the auspices of God[less]TV and YouTube

"Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here". Matthew 12:38-41

"For we walk by faith, not by sight". 2 Corinthians 5:7

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign. We walk by faith not by what? How much more clear need the Word be? Supporters call it a "divine outpouring" when in reality it is a diseased infection and it's spreading through undiscerning charismatic fellowships like wild fire. Deceivers occupying the office of pastor in local assemblies embrace the deception and then pass it on to their witless congregants like an STD (Spiritually Transmitted Disease). Like its 'revival' predecessors, Ignited is an Assemblies of God church pastored by Steven Strider. Even a cursory observation of what's happening in Lakeland exposes it as the spiritually regurgitated, demonic manifestations witnessed in Brownsville Pensacola and Toronto Canada. Lakeland is being heralded as the "Third Wave" of this charismatic delusion and unbeknown to participants, Satan is sitting in the director's chair.

As we mentioned in our last report one of the greatest dangers lies in the ASSUMPTION that such like spiritual manifestations are from God. Such assumptions are born both of ignorance and arrogance, believing as charismatics (and therefore God's elect) they are somehow beyond deception. This pompous delusion is precisely why they are deceived, and why Satan is having a field day in their midst. The Word of God clearly warns of end time lying signs and wonders. We have witnessed them with the demonic Marian apparitions at Fatima, Lourdes and elsewhere, as well as bleeding 'Saint' statues and weeping pictures in diverse places. We have seen them at Pensacola and Toronto and now they're back in Lakeland Florida. These are real miracles and signs designed to deceive, especially those who claim to be children of the Living God. And Satan will be largely successful because such people spend more time chasing after, and participating in these manifestations than scrutinising them in the light of Scripture. Those who are deceived deserve to be. They have received the delusion because they refused to received the love of the truth. (2 Thessalonians. 2:10) The word translated 'saved' in this passage can equally be translated 'protected'. For the believer there is safety and protection in the Word not in the sign. His Word is truth (John 17:17). Those who love His truth - His Word, are protected from the delusion. Those who do not, are not, it's that simple.

And still the Bentley Bunch spring to his defense whenever his deceit is exposed. "You can't condemn something you haven't experienced. You can't knock it until you've tried it. If you felt what I did at Lakeland you'd know it was God working" Oh really? Let's follow that 'logic' through to it's natural conclusion shall we? Should I 'experience' murdering someone in order to condemn it? Should I participate in homosexual acts to know it is wrong? Should I drink cyanide to see if it will kill me before proclaiming it dangerous? Stupid, subjective reasoning at its very worst. As one writer wisely put it: "With cyanide the Warnings are on the bottle, with Lakeland they're in the Bible".

Lakeland Deception

Aside from being in complete and absolute contradiction to Biblical revival, as well as being replete with Dominionist, Manifest Sons of God theosophy, the Lakeland outpouring has way too many inconsistencies to be considered anywhere near credible. Take the following Bentley gems for example: 3

The list of inconsistencies and complete biblical error surrounding everyone and everything involved with Todd Bentley and the Lakeland Outpouring is staggeringly long. It is our evaluation that Todd Bentley (knowingly or unknowingly) is a puppet of Satan and that the Lakeland Outpouring / Revival, call it what you will, is a demonic manifestation of the lying signs and wonders the Word of God has long warned would come. It is our contention that supportive involvement of any kind in this and such like events opens participants up to serious declinative spiritual consequence.

As the following writer correctly states: "If You Want Revival, Repent" .. because that's the only way it's going to come.

If You Want Revival - Repent!

By Slaughter of the Sheep

June 26, 2008

When I prayerfully ponder all that is currently going on in the modern church, I can’t help but feel such a heavy burden for the sadly blinded flock.  Rick Warren is teaching marketing strategies instead of God’s infallible Word, and teaching others to do so, Todd Bentley is guiding people to bypass Jesus and embrace seducing spirits, Marilyn Hickey and other WoF teachers are selling trinkets to the poor, sick, and despondent to pad their bank accounts, and Patricia King is chasing signs and wonders all over the earth.  I could go on and on, but you get the point.

Those who subscribe to such fallacy say that this is God revealing Himself in these end times.  But, God has already revealed Himself in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.  Outside of Jesus, there is no other revelation.  That’s what they don’t understand.

To have revival, true Holy Ghost revival, there must be brokenness and repentance.  How else can you be revived without submitting yourself to God?  I’m reminded of the Pharisee who prayed and said that he thanked God that he wasn’t as other sinners, and proceeded to exalt himself.  Yet, there also stood a publican who wouldn’t even lift his eyes to look up; he thumped his chest and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner”  (Luke 18:10-14).  The publican was the one who was justified because of his contrite heart, and because of his repentance.  He was revived.

Many associated with the Lakeland Outpouring believe the manifestations they are experiencing is of God.  How sad.  They haven’t a clue that what God truly wants is for us to humble ourselves and call upon the name of the Lord (1 Peter 5).  He wants us to take His yoke upon us and learn of Him.  He wants us to learn His Word, and walk in His ways.  He wants us to be obedient.  This requires faith.

Why are people so blind?  With the pastors we have today, is it any wonder?  Not all can fall under this indictment, but many can.  If the flock had been taught the pure Word of God when they were young, they would have grown tall and strong in the faith.  Instead, they were taught a watered down, man-centered gospel where the cross is belittled, Hell is expunged, and the Holy Spirit is the central focus, not Jesus.  The modern church is being taught nothing of God’s wrath, original sin, or the need for a Savior.  If you don’t preach sin, then there’s no need to preach the need for a Savior, and then Jesus’ sacrafice loses its significance.  They don’t understand the full measure of what Jesus did for them.  They were never really introduced to God.  Instead, they have an idea of God that is convoluted and false.  They have no idea of who He is.

What tears at my heart more than anything is that during these last days, it will get worse.  The love of many shall wax cold, as our Savior said.  When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth?

Indeed, thinking they have sight they stumble in the darkness seeking a spiritual sensation rather than salvation, a feeling rather than faith, they are driven by self not humility, by riches not contrition. They seek after an experience rather than the truth. The Word is faithful and true, their god is their belly4. They are all together gone astray and are willing fodder for wolves such as Todd Bentley. We must always remember that running the race is as much running toward the light as it is running away from the darkness

Gary Osborne is a Pentecostal pastor who personally attended Bentley's unholy rabble over a series of nights. For Pastor Osborne's eye witness account of the bizarre goings on in Lakeland Florida click HERE.

Heavenly Father, open the eyes of your people and lead them out of the deception into your truth. Your Word is truth. Father by the power of your Holy Spirit, lead your people back to your Word that they may be saved and that You may be ever glorified. Amen

End Notes

  1. The use of the word “some,” here τινες tines - does not imply that the number would be small. The meaning is, that “certain persons” would thus depart, or that “there would be” an apostasy of the kind here mentioned, in the last days. From the parallel passage in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 it would seem that this was to be an extensive apostasy. - Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible.

  2. This may either mean teachings “respecting” demons, or teachings “by” demons. - Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible.

  4. Whose God is their belly - Who worship their own appetites; or who live not to adore and honour God, but for self-indulgence and sensual gratifications; see Romans.16:18 - - Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible.
