Malware Removal Tip – Dec2010:

· Rogue Antivirus software is extremely common at the moment. The symptoms are:

o You get an official looking window appear telling you that your PC is infected with xx number of Trojans/viruses/malware/spyware etc – but it is not your regular anti-virus software or any other software you recognise

o Your regular anti-virus software is blocked, often by another official looking warning telling you that your anti-virus software is itself infected

o You cannot run any applications at all – you just get warnings that everything is infected

· DON’T click on these warnings and ‘register’ the software as is suggested – these are FAKE warnings and the only infection is the Rogue Antivirus software itself.

· Boot Windows into Safe Mode with Networking (press the F8 key as you turn your computer on, after the BIOS screen but before the ‘Loading Windows’ screen appears – then choose ‘Safe Mode – with Networking’)

· Try to access the internet from Safe Mode and go to www.malwarebytes.org

· Click on the Download Free Version link

· Install the program and allow it to update, then run a Full Scan and allow it to remove anything it finds (at the end of the scan you will be prompted ‘Show Results’ and then ‘Remove Selected’.

· Reboot and run another update and another full scan from Windows again (not safe mode, just start normally).

· If you can’t access the internet from safe mode (ie if you have a Wireless USB connection or similar) then try to download the program onto a flash drive from another PC, and install it from there.

· That should clean the system – if not, or if you can’t get Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware installed, you will need your machine to be professionally cleaned.
